At Bastant Design, it's about more than just creating beautiful products. We have a clear ambition that our kitchen, hallway and bathroom interiors should also have a high level of functionality, so that your everyday life is filled with moments of efficient luxury. But even though function and beauty are the basis of all our designs, we have actually also made a number of conscious choices to create a product that will benefit both you and the environment.
In this article, we invite you behind the scenes of our production to give you an insight into how we create the timeless and functional designs you find in our collection, and what thoughts we have about consideration for the environment and future generations. And where everything we do is imbued with a huge passion for craftsmanship, an eye for detail and a deep respect for the materials we work with.
Inspiration and design process
Everything starts with inspiration. At Bastant Design, we find our inspiration in the Nordic minimalism and pure functionalism that have characterized Scandinavian design for decades. When we begin a new design process, it often starts with a desire to optimize a process in the home through the interior. It can be a place in the home where we ourselves experience a problem, like when Martin invented the design for our Bastant kitchen roll holder . As a father of young children, he often found himself standing with a child on his arm and needing a piece of kitchen roll that was impossible to tear off with one hand without the entire kitchen roll holder toppling over. This was the start of a process where he designed a minimalist but robust kitchen roll holder that never topples over. Over the years, the design was refined so that the base plate, rod and top got just the right, sharp look, and the design in the different materials such as brass, steel, black and copper lifted the luxurious expression to new heights.
In the same way, we think through all the designs we have made for ourselves over the years. A shelf for the living room often fits with a different depth than a shelf for the kitchen, which may not be as deep, but can advantageously have a small edge to create a nice frame for spices and other delicious things that you enjoy having standing out front.
All our designs are also designed with a tactile experience in mind. A tray is not just a tray, but should also be a pleasure to touch and handle, where soft, deburred edges make the tray a completely unique experience for both eyes and hands.
Choice of materials
Bastant Design's material selection is based on quality, durability and aesthetics. By using pure, natural materials such as brass, steel and iron, we ensure that our products are incredibly durable, as the materials have a very long lifespan. The materials are also not only visually appealing, but also robust, making them suitable for daily use and ensuring that the products last for many years. If you were to be faced with replacing your material choice, both brass, steel and iron have an almost infinite recycling cycle.
From idea to prototype
Once we have a good idea, it doesn't take many days before we have a prototype in hand. Thanks to our Danish workshop and Martin's many years of experience as a blacksmith, he quickly has a draft ready, which we can either refine or approve. This makes the process from idea to finished product incredibly short, as we don't have to wait for goods from far away, but have the incredibly big advantage that we make all our designs in the local area.
Crafts and production with respect for the environment
Once we have approved the prototype, the actual production begins. The basis for all our designs is the traditional blacksmithing craft, where Martin quality assures the entire process, from training other blacksmiths to approving the final product. Our products are often produced in small series, which allows us to maintain a high standard of quality and detail. We are incredibly proud to maintain production in our Danish workshop, as it is deep in our design DNA that we have production very close to our everyday lives. In addition, it just feels really good to make a product that is manufactured under proper conditions and, not least, has the shortest possible journey from workshop to customer.
Environmental consideration is a cornerstone of our production. We are constantly working to reduce our environmental footprint by minimizing waste, using long-lasting materials and ensuring that our production processes are as energy efficient as possible. We believe that high-quality products, produced locally and made to last, are an important part of a sustainable future.
From workshop to home
Once the products are finished and approved, they are ready to be shipped to your home. We carefully package each product to ensure it arrives in perfect condition.
